Escif
Escif is a Spanish artist based in Valencia, known for his distinctive visual language and conceptual approach to painting and public space. Since the late 1990s, he has developed a body of work that moves between murals, works on paper and painting, using deceptively simple imagery to address complex social, political and everyday realities.
His work is characterised by a restrained, almost illustrative style. Everyday objects, figures, landscapes and familiar situations are reduced to their essential forms, often accompanied by subtle humour, ambiguity or visual contradictions. Rather than offering fixed messages, Escif creates images that invite the viewer to reconsider what initially appears ordinary or self-evident.
Public space plays an important role in his practice. Escif approaches the city not simply as a surface for painting, but as a context in which an image becomes part of its surroundings and enters into dialogue with the people who encounter it. This sensitivity to context also extends to his studio work, where seemingly modest compositions often reveal multiple layers of meaning.
Escif has created murals and exhibited his work internationally, while maintaining an intentionally understated artistic presence. Across both his public and studio practice, his work combines clarity and simplicity with a sharp observation of contemporary life.
